WHAT CAN CHINESE MEDICINE TREAT?

The main forms of treatment in Chinese Medicine are herbal medicine and acupuncture. One of these may be chosen as the most suitable, or they may be used in combination. In addition, massage is very frequently used alongside acupuncture, and dietary advice will be important in some cases.

Chinese medicine can treat a very wide range of conditions. Practitioners at the Birmingham Centre for Chinese Medicine have built up a great deal of experience in the following areas in particular:

SKIN DISEASE

Including eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, urticaria.
Usually treated with herbal medicine.
This is one of the great strengths of Chinese herbal therapy, which has a well-deserved deserved reputation in the UK in this field.

RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS

Including asthma, bronchitis, coughs, hay fever and sinusitis.
Can be treated either with herbal medicine or with acupuncture.
Respiratory and allergic problems are very widespread and Chinese medicine is excellent in this area.

DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS

Including irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis.
Can be treated either with herbal medicine or acupuncture; dietary advice is also important.
Digestive problems often have no specific diagnosis or treatment in conventional medicine yet cause much misery. Chinese medicine can be very helpful.

GYNAECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS

Including pre-menstrual syndrome, painful periods, menopausal problems, endometriosis, some forms of infertility.
Can be treated with herbal medicine or acupuncture.

Chinese medicine has a great deal to offer here, at a time when the value of conventional hormonal treatments is under question.

PAINFUL CONDITIONS

Connected with all manner of musculo-skeletal problems (ie problems associated with muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints).
Usually treated with acupuncture, often in combination with massage.
This is a very well-known application of acupuncture, which is an excellent therapy for both acute and chronic painful conditions.

HEADACHES

Mainly treated with acupuncture, but herbal medicine is also a very useful option.
Again a deservedly well-known application of Chinese medicine.

ANXIETY AND STRESS

Mainly treated with acupuncture, which is exceptionally good as a calming treatment.

CHRONIC FATIGUE

Can be treated with herbal medicine or acupuncture.
Chronic fatigue syndromes are common, but often have no convincing conventional diagnosis and are poorly understood. Chinese medicine has over the centuries developed effective approaches to problems of low energy, and improvements in energy are one of the main benefits experienced by patients.

ADDICTIONS

Treated primarily with acupuncture.
The most well-known use is in smoking addiction, but other addictions can also be helped.

SUPPORTIVE THERAPY

For some severe chronic conditions, including HIV and cancers.
Either herbal medicine or acupuncture may be used, to help with energy levels and to deal with the side-effects of conventional treatment. A great deal of laboratory evidence has built up on the anti-cancer properties of a number of Chinese herbs, and in certain areas (eg prostate cancer) orthodox clinical trials have provided strong evidence on the benefits of Chinese medicine (link to page on Chinese Herbal Medicine and Prostate Cancer).
