BIRMINGHAM CENTRE FOR CHINESE MEDICINE

245 Alcester Road South, Kings Heath, Birmingham B14 6DT

Tel: 0121-441 2757

The Centre was established in 1995 to provide a new focus for Chinese medicine in the Birmingham area. Chinese medicine is an ancient healing system that has been practised and developed in Asia for over 2000 years, and more recently has become increasingly popular in the West. It includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage and manipulation, breathing and movement exercises, and dietary advice. The Centre offers treatments in all these areas and at the same time provides therapies from the Western tradition which are highly compatible, in particular in the area of manipulation and masssage. In addition we have recently opened a studio offering therapeutic movement classes.

The therapies practised at the Centre encourage a regard for the person as a whole. Many patients have a variety of symptoms which are treated in separate compartments by orthodox medicine. The oriental and the western holistic traditions allow these problems to be approached in an integral way.

The Centre works as a team, allowing referral from one practitioner to another when appropriate. Guidance will be given to patients who are uncertain which therapy is most suitable for their condition.

This page gives very brief descriptions of the main therapies available. For further information you are welcome to consult our more detailed pages about each type of treatment or telephone the Centre or send an e-mail to enquiries@bccm.freeserve.co.uk

REMEDIAL AND SPORTS MASSAGE Margaret and Chris use deep massage and soft tissue manipulation to treat musculo-skeletal problems. Remedial massage eases tight, aching muscles and hastens their healing when they are damaged or overworked. Excessively tight muscles can cause shoulder, back or joint pain. Sports massage alleviates many sports injuries and regular treatment helps prevent over-use problems. Margaret's treatment may include techniques of Chinese Medicine such as moxibustion and cupping, and may offer acupuncture treatment where appropriate. Chris also practises  Myofascial Release, a deep connective tissue treatment. Margaret, Chris and Gareth all hold the Diploma of the London School of Sports Massage.

Cathy Sullivan

SHIATSU is sometimes described as acupuncture without needles, in which pressure on energy points and stretching is applied through loose clothing.  Cathy trained at the Nei Guan Institute for Shiatsu in the Netherlands. She is a member of the Shiatsu Society of the UK.  Cathy particularly recommends Shiatsu for stress- related ailments.

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE is a gentle relaxing, oil-based  massage which incorporates techniques of massage derived from both western and ancient eastern traditions.  It involves the whole person, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and each session is adapted to the needs of the individual client.  It is guided by principles of personal awareness, sensitivity and quality of touch.

HOLISTIC MASSAGE is a deeply relaaxing oil-based massage which involves the whole person, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It is person-centred and adapted to the client's particular needs at the time rather than following a standard routine. It is guided by principles of personal awareness, sensitivity and quality of touch.

THE COACHHOUSE

Our studio offers non-competitive gentle movement classes, aimed at improving health and enhancing relaxation, in small informal groups, where you are guaranteed to receive individual attention.  We hold classes in the ancient eastern exercise form of Qi Gong  which combines  breathing and posture, and offers an excellent way to improve your general well-being.   Pilates, which is more recent, but now hugely popular, uses controlled movements to improve tone, flexibility and posture
